Soil Morphology Overview

These descriptions help identify the type of soil in which apple trees are grown as well as understand regional differences between sites. A visual representation of the soil shows the differences between layers of the soil profile, where roots are present, and can guide growers in where to place soil moisture sensors and take soil samples for analysis. The appearance of the soil also reflects how orchard floor management can influence the soil physical properties and assists in making management recommendations to improve the water holding capacity of the soil.

Note

No soil profile image. The mountain river site was investigated for the purposes of understanding the effects of biochar on nutrient leaching in which physical characterisation was conducted of all soil layers, chemical analysis and profile description were minimised for the purpose of soil classification rather than full site description.
