Soil Management

The structural condition of the topsoil is quite good, having good drainable porosity and thus aeration status and high infiltration rates. Management is encouraged to continue current management practices that promote residue return and carbon cycling in the topsoil. The two A1 horizons provide considerable soil moisture whilst being well drained and well aerated. In relation to irrigation, the refill point for the A1 horizon is between 33% (50 kPa) to 30 % (100 kPa) soil moisture. The clay subsoils however, have little readily available soil water and poor aeration status. Despite poor aeration status there is no evidence of waterlogging, which is fortunate as the subsoil ESP indicates potential for clay dispersion and blockage of drains. The chemical status of the soil is good, having neutral pH (could be a little more acid), high carbon content, and moderate CEC in the A1 horizon. Overall irrigation and fertilizer management of this soil should be relatively straight forward.
